From the witnesses of the Rwandan Genocide

“I am the only survivor of my family. I was only 19 years old when the genocide took place. My parents, three sisters and two brothers were killed in Gitarama on the 14th April....We witnessed people being murdered in front of us...I am still alive today, but I carry the pain and the memories.”

-Adeline

"In all, I lost five of my children.

I was eventually captured and repeatedly abused. I became the prey of the militiamen and was left for dead.

When I regained consciousness, I found myself with the RPF. They told me they had found me half-dead"

-Janviere

“My family fled to a church in Musambira because we thought there would be no killings in a house of God. But grenades were thrown inside, and machetes met those trying to escape.

I was bleeding from my leg. Dead bodies lay all around me. I survived, but lost almost my entire family."

-Odette

“There were ten of us hiding when we were caught. Our hands were tied and we were slashed with machetes. They thought we were dead.

Three of us survived: a girl, a boy covered in scars, and me.

I now meet others who carry scars like mine. We pray, and our hearts ease. But the memories live on.”
